People used to cook, store and enrich food plus water in metalwares to derive mineral value (minerals like copper, silver, iron etc.). Even now, 'Tamra Jal' ( jal = water) is recommended in India as per Ayurveda. This water is stored overnight in a copper jug and drunk first thing in the morning for various health benefits. It is said when water is stored like this it stays fresh for years together!! It had also been successfully proved that all bacteria even the stubborn one like E-coli gets killed if the water is stored in a Copper vessel just for 2 ½ hours. Brass is another metal (Brass 60% +Copper 40% =Zinc) which was used for medicinal properties.
